Spin-Offs

The EMSEC Chair has a long and successful history of high-tech spin-offs. Our companies are based on technologies developed through chair research for which there is market demand. The extensive start-up ecosystem in Bochum provides an ideal environment for the rapid and successful development of young companies in the cybersecurity field. They are supported by the startup incubator CUBE5.

ESCRYPT GmbH

ESCRYPT – Embedded Security GmbH was founded in 2004 as a spin-off from the EMSEC chair of Christof Paar and Willi Mannheims and acquired by Bosch in 2012. Since 2022 ESCRYPT is part of the ETAS Group. ESCRYPT offers security solutions for embedded IT security, i.e., for industries such as automotive, mechanical engineering or eHealth.

Kasper & Oswald GmbH

The company was founded in 2012 by Timo Kasper and David Oswald and offers comprehensive product and consulting services in the field of security of embedded systems and IT applications. The range of services includes the analysis, design and implementation of appropriate security solutions. In training courses and lectures Kasper & Oswald presents problems and modern solution approaches of hardware and software security.

PHYSEC GmbH

PHYSEC GmbH was founded in 2016 as a spin-off of the Chair of Embedded Security by Christian Zenger and Heiko Koepke. With innovative security and connectivity concepts based on information-theoretical approaches (physical layer security), PHYSEC enables the secure implementation of new functionalities and business models in the Internet of Things. The start-up idea PHYSEC was funded by the BMWi with the EXIST research transfer in 2015 and has already been awarded numerous prizes. PHYSEC GmbH’s customers come, for example, from the fields of critical infrastructures (KRITIS), building automation and smart homes.

EMPROOF GmbH

Emerging from the 2017 BMBF StartUpSecure project, emproof GmbH was founded in 2019 by Marc Fyrbiak, Benjamin Kollenda and Philipp Koppe. emproof develops solutions for intellectual property protection in microcontroller software against reverse engineering, competitive analysis and product piracy. The core product is a compiler extension that easily integrates into the development process and automatically removes artifacts important for reverse engineering from embedded software.
