What makes the degree program special?

Computer Science

The Computer Science degree program is highly topical, future-oriented, international and bilingual. You can expect a newly designed course of study that reflects the development of modern computer science and prepares you optimally for the challenges of the coming decades. We attach great importance to sound and broad training in the fundamental areas. In newly designed courses, you will be prepared by a young, highly motivated team of professors for many topics that will shape our future (such as machine learning). Your comprehensive basic knowledge will then allow you to recognize the connections between the sub-areas and enable you to specialize in any direction in your Master’s degree and professional life. Computer science is international. To ensure that you also have a good command of their “official language” English, your language skills will be expanded through special courses until German and English are taught on an equal footing during the course of your studies. Don’t worry, your school English is enough to start with!

Applied Computer Science

The Applied Computer Science degree course is polydisciplinary and therefore offers a wide range of application areas and specializations to choose from. In mechanical engineering, linguistics, biology and many other fields, modern techniques are used to drive research and industry forward. By studying Applied Computer Science, you can gain insights into many different areas and learn how to use your skills with and for other sciences. Your toolbox is practically oriented to master projects and the real demands of professional life. By the end of your studies, you will be the ultimate team player, having learned how to use your particular strengths in mixed teams.

There are also opportunities to specialize in “pure computer knowledge”: IT security or game development, for example, offer insights into sought-after areas of computer science.

All of this is based on a solid core area that provides the necessary basic knowledge to be successful in all areas.

IT Security

IT security at RUB has made a name for itself both nationally and internationally and is one of the most renowned locations for research and training in the field of IT security worldwide. It is no coincidence that the “Max Planck Institute for Cyber Security and Privacy Protection” and the Cluster of Excellence “CASA – Cyber Security in the Age of Large-Scale Adversaries” are located in Bochum. Bochum is also the location with the most start-up companies in the IT security sector. As an IT security student, you can benefit from this highly dynamic environment, e.g. through cutting-edge topics in lectures and seminars or through numerous job opportunities during your studies.

From the 4th semester onwards, you have the opportunity to set your own specialist focus in the field of IT security through our extensive elective catalogs, the industrial internship and the Bachelor’s thesis.
