Information on Studies
It is best to start selecting the courses you would like to take with us before you arrive in Bochum. You can take courses from our faculty as well as courses from other faculties, provided that these are open to exchange students. Please note that there are different options for registering for courses and exams at Ruhr University Bochum, and you must obtain information about these yourself from the relevant faculties or lecturers.
Courses at the Faculty of Computer Science
The Faculty of Computer Science offers degree programs in Applied Computer Science, Computer Science, and IT Security. Exchange students can choose courses from all of these areas. Our courses that are open to exchange students can be found in the International Course Catalog. Please select the correct semester in the upper left corner. The courses offered by the Faculty of Computer Science can be found in the Engineering Sciences. You are not allowed to take courses that are not listed in the International Course Catalog, unfortunately.
You can also find information about the courses in the International Course Catalog. Therein, you can learn about the content, credit points, and exams of the courses, as well as check when they take place.
You do not need to register in advance for the courses offered by the Faculty of Computer Science. Instead, you can simply attend the first session where you will receive the most important information. Additionally, a Moodle course is often provided for the course, where you can find teaching materials. Please note that while you do not need to register for our courses, registration for exams is mandatory (see below).
Exams at the Faculty of Computer Science
Please make sure to register for exams on time if you wish to take any during your semester or year abroad. Here, we summarize the most important points regarding exams offered at our faculty. You can find all information by the Faculty of Computer Science on the topic of exams on our examination website.

- Please use the FlexNow system for administration of exams (registration and deregistration for exams, notification of results, etc.).
- You must register for exams within the deadlines.
- We do not allow you to take exams that you have not registered for in FlexNow within the deadlines.
- Please contact our Examination Office within the corresponding deadlines if you encounter any difficulties when registering or deregistering for exams.
- Please note that the Faculty of Computer Science offers two exam phases each semester. Thus, please make sure to register for the exams in the exam phase you would like to take your exams in.
Please contact your lecturers and us in October (for winter semesters) or April (for summer semesters) via cs-international@rub.de if your stay with us ends earlier than our semester and you are therefore unable to participate in exams. Additionally, please note that there are different regulations for exams of other faculties, and inform yourself at the respective faculty (see below).
Courses and exams of other faculties
As an exchange student at the Faculty of Computer Science, you generally also have the opportunity to take courses at other faculties of Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB). Often, different rules apply for registering and deregistering for courses and exams there than at our faculty though. Since the individual faculties work largely independently of each other, we are not familiar with the regulations of other faculties. Therefore, it is important that you independently inform yourself early on about what you need to consider when taking courses at other faculties. Other faculties often also list their courses for exchange students in the International Course Catalogue, so you can inform yourself there. Please contact the respective faculties and/or the lecturers of the courses you wish to take independently if information is missing.
In addition to the offers of the various faculties, RUB also provides language courses in different languages. You can find information about German courses on the websites of the Centre for German as a Foreign Language. For language courses in other languages, please visit the websites of the University Language Centre. Here too, you will need to handle the registration for courses and exams yourself.
Learning Agreement
For students participating in the Erasmus program, it is mandatory to create a so-called Learning Agreement before the stay abroad and have it signed by both your home university and us. This agreement specifies which courses you will take during your exchange and how they will be recognized at your home university. Most universities use the “Erasmus without Paper” portal to create an Online Learning Agreement (OLA). You will receive detailed information about the Learning Agreement from your home university.
For students who come to us through an exchange program other than Erasmus, such as KOSPIE or as Freemovers, it is not always mandatory to choose courses before the exchange. Even if you are not required to select your courses in advance, we strongly recommend that you do so and discuss your course selection with us though. Please contact us via cs-international@rub.de before your arrival in Bochum to do so.
