Test of Time Award ECML PKDD 2025
At this year’s European Conference on Machine Learning and Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases, the Test of Time Award went to a paper on „Difference Target Propagation“ by Dong-Hyun Lee, Saizheng Zhang, Asja Fischer, and Yoshua Bengio from 2015.
The leading European conference on machine learning and data mining, ECML PKDD (European Conference on Machine Learning and Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases), presents this year’s Test of Time Award to Dong-Hyun Lee, Saizheng Zhang, Asja Fischer, and Yoshua Bengio.
In their paper originally published in 2015, titled „Difference Target Propagation“, the researchers examined a method for biologically plausible learning in neural networks, introducing the „target propagation“ approach as a possible alternative to conventional backpropagation. With the Test of Time Award, ECML PKDD recognizes the significant and lasting impact of this work on research into neural network training.
