Tim A. Majchrzak takes on double role
Joint appointment of the Faculty of Computer Science and CAIS promotes interdisciplinary research and collaboration
Since April 2025, Tim A. Majchrzak has been the new Professor of Computing, Technology and Society at the Faculty of Computer Science and Scientific Director at the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS). The joint appointment brings the Faculty and CAIS even closer together.
As part of his research, Tim Majchrzak investigates technical, organizational and social aspects of software engineering, with a particular focus on mobile computing, IoT and edge computing. At the same time, he is intensively involved in interdisciplinary topics of information systems, in particular how these can be used to manage and prevent crisis situations. He is also interested in the social impact of technological innovations.
As a computer scientist with a strong interdisciplinary focus, Tim Majchrzak will be involved in teaching at the faculty, particularly with courses that emphasize the social dimensions of computer science. Tim Majchrzak is also the new Scientific Director at CAIS. The focus here is on the scientific management of the institute, particularly its strategic orientation. Both positions are linked by research: joint projects are not only intended to gain scientific knowledge, but also to further increase the visibility of the faculty and CAIS and thus further strengthen the city of Bochum as an IT location. “Projects at CAIS take a holistic approach and integrate computer science and social sciences, for example in the areas of artificial intelligence, education and participatory democracy,” explains Tim Majchrzak. “I look forward to being able to incorporate the computer science expertise of my colleagues from the faculty in future research projects.”
In addition to the strong computer science and cyber security network, Tim Majchrzak was primarily attracted to Bochum by the creative opportunities that arise from his unique double role as a professor of computer science and scientific director. However, the new place of work is also a return to his own roots, as Tim Majchrzak grew up in the Ruhr region.
Before returning to the Ruhr region, Tim Majchrzak spent over ten years researching at the University of Agder (UiA) in Norway, the last five years as Professor of Information Systems. Prior to this, he was a deputy professor at the University of Cologne for two years. He began his academic career interdisciplinary at a computer science chair in business informatics at the University of Münster.
