Ressourceneffiziente Systemsoftware (RESY)

Ressourceneffiziente Systemsoftware (RESY)

In the winter term 2024/25 we have a special edition of the RESY seminar:Aspects of Sustainable Computer Systems (SCS)in Kooperation mit der Dependable Systems Software Group (DSS) der Universität des Saarlandes statt.

Content

As the world struggles with climate change, the computing sector’s role as a source of greenhouse emissions (and other bad environmental impact) is steadily increasing.
This seminar, co-located and co-hosted with the DSS Team at Saarland University, explores the intersection of computer technology and sustainability — identifying the key challenges of and innovative solutions for a sustainable future with computers.
We begin by looking at the origins of carbon emissions and learning to understand where emissions are caused. We then focus on known and new methods for measuring and modeling emissions in computer systems. Finally, we show ways in which systems and software can be adapted to become more sustainable.

Seminar Objectives

  • Gain expert knowledge in one aspect of sustainable computing systems
  • Understanding how the scientific community and scientific processes work
    • To find scientific publications
    • Critically evaluate scientific literature
  • Constructive discussion culture about scientific publications and seminar contributions by fellow students
  • Create and present scientific texts

Organization

Each student works on one topic. One or two scientific papers on the respective topic are provided as a starting point, which are then worked on independently. Based on the further literature analysis, the given and, optionally, additional works are summarized and critically evaluated. The results of the research are presented to the seminar participants in a short presentation. The research results are then summarized and prepared for students. All participants will write a review for other students’ texts and incorporate the feedback they receive into their own text.

Structure of the Semester

The semester will be divided into four parts:
  • Research phase (4 weeks)
    • Literature research
    • Presentation of the results
  • Writing of the text in the form of a short book chapter (4 weeks)
  • Two review phases (1-2 weeks each)
    • Review in cooperation with the students from Saarland University in the middle and at the end of the semester
  • Revision phase: incorporation of the feedback received (1-2 weeks)

Requirements

Presentation

  • Brief overview of the research results
  • Length: 10 minutes
  • Language: English or German

Text

  • Overview and textual presentation of the selected topic
  • Submission of a review-ready version at the beginning of January
  • Submission of the final version at the end of the semester
  • Language: English

Review

  • Constructive feedback on the text from other seminar participants
  • Feedback on content, comprehensibility and form of presentation
  • Two review phases:
    • Phase 1: end of November
    • Phase 2: end of January
