Professorships in Computer Science (w3 and W2 tenure-track W3)

Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) is one of Germany’s leading research universities, encompassing the whole range of academic disciplines. With 43,000 students and 6,200 employees, it is also one of Germany’s largest universities, making it a vibrant and inspiring place to study and work. RUB is located within the Ruhr area, one of Europe‘s largest metropolitan regions with a population of 5.1 million. Together with the two other large universities Technical University of Dortmund and University of Duisburg-Essen, the Ruhr area is home to a community of 120,000 students and 14,000 researchers and offers attractive career opportunities for excellent researchers from around the world.

The newly established Faculty of Computer Science at Ruhr-University in Bochum, Germany has several tenure-track or tenured openings. The positions are part of a concerted effort to strengthen the existing faculty and to foster collaborations with the recently established Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy (MPI-SP). We welcome outstanding applicants from all areas of computer science, including, but not limited to:

  • Foundations of Computer Science
  • Programming Languages
  • Software Engineering
  • Data Science (Data Mining, Machine Learning, Big Data)
  • Computer Architecture

Appointments will be made for full professorship, or as assistant/associate professorship with tenure track to full professorship. Salaries and working conditions are internationally very competitive and come with civil-servant status. The positions come with a startup package, typically including phd/postdoc positions, subject to negotiation. Full professorships are chair positions with administrative staff. RUB offers generous dual-career and relocation support.

RUB offers a vibrant environment for computer science research. The Faculty of Computer Science is currently in its ramp up phase and provides many possibilities for participation and engagement. RUB also offers opportunities for collaboration with the MPI-SP, the Cluster of Excellence “Cyber Security in the Age of Large-Scale Adversaries (CASA),”, and Bochum’s well-developed start-up community, supported by an incubator (Cube 5) and a start-up center (WORLDFACTORY). Our working language is English, knowledge of German is not required. RUB offers a family-friendly environment.

  • Candidates are expected to show leadership experience, the willingness to engage in interdisciplinary scientific work, and to contribute to the faculty’s undergraduate and graduate education.
