Welcome to the Data-Intensive Systems Group

The Data-Intensive Systems Group conducts research at the intersection of data systems and artificial intelligence. Our goal is to build the next generation of autonomous data systems that can efficiently process massive volumes of continuously arriving, heterogeneous data. Modern applications—from industrial IoT and autonomous systems to scientific infrastructures and multimodal AI—generate data at unprecedented scale and speed. Existing data systems still rely heavily on manually engineered heuristics and expert knowledge to optimize execution. We envision a future where data systems continuously learn, reason, and adapt on their own. Our research proposes advances in data management, machine learning, and foundation models to make large-scale data processing more intelligent, efficient, and accessible.

Interested in working with us for a thesis / internship?

We’re currently offering thesis topics on how AI agents can fundamentally change data systems. Topics span from investigating internals of optimizers to supporting multimodality natively in data systems. Please contact Prof. Manisha Luthra Agnihotri (manisha.luthra@rub.de) for more information.
